Norte/Sur

Since the inception of Eloísa Cartonera in 2001, publishing houses known as editoriales cartoneras have expanded considerably throughout Latin America and the rest of the world. As a movement, they are distinguished by their dedication to making literature accessible and promoting local authors, causes, and lives. Unlike more commercialized publishers, they also prioritize environmental sustainability and often artisanal craft, with unique, handmade art on recycled cardboard (originally collected by Argentines in Buenos Aires facing a Great Depression) that lends cartoneras their name. This project translates for publication (Kodama Cartnera, Mexico) and exhibition (Arnold Gallery) a particular Tijuana-based anthology, Norte/Sur, which gives voice to marginalized individuals and the inextricability of violence and migrancy within Latin America and the borderlands.

Norte/Sur, co-translated with Liam Schmidt and Carmen Garcia-Armero; Tijuana, MX: Kodama Cartonera (2021)
